Miramar South Students Show Strong Gains in Comprehension

Miramar South School has seen strong progress from its Grade 7/Year 8 students after using CSI – Comprehension Strategies Instruction.

After undergoing AsTTle pre-assessment in February 2008, 75% of the class scored in the lowest quartile for New Zealand reading comprehension standards. No students in the class scored in the highest quartile.

Their gains in comprehension, as measured by AsTTle post-assessment after using CSI, can be seen in the data below. The percentage of students in the lowest quartile dropped to 45%, while 35% of pupils leaped into the highest quartile for reading comprehension in New Zealand

“In six years of teaching this age level, I’ve never worked with a resource that’s contributed so much,” said Vice Principal/Literacy Leader, Kyran Smith.

CSI really engages students and is very effective. It has text and audio, and covers math, science, social studies, and English language arts content areas.

One of the things the children really get out of CSI is the inner confidence to deal with difficult text.”

In CSI, students encounter various text types in fiction and nonfiction, and use a variety of strategies to comprehend each text. The engaging and topical texts are provided for interactive whiteboard, hardcopy, and audio formats.

“It helps kids to learn reading strategies like making connections with yourself, the world, and text.” - JESSICA

“The CSI program helps us to deepen our understanding about the topics by teaching us how to think deeper and ask ourselves questions.” -
FUSIMOANA
