CSI and the UK Curriculum

CSI is based on the idea that pupils can really read when they are able to decode the text by using a range of strategies. To become fluent readers they must also understand or comprehend what they read. To help them do this they need to be taught a range of reading comprehension strategies and be encouraged to reflect on their own understanding and learning, or to use metacognitive thinking – to think about how they are thinking. CSI’s approach helps pupils go beyond literal interpretation and recall to explore the complex meanings of texts using such strategies as drawing inferences, making connections, questioning, and others.

Planning is underway regarding a fully reversioned CSI for the UK. We will keep you updated regarding CSI in the UK via our blog posts and other pages on this website. In the meantime, if you are a UK educator, or have ideas about how CSI should look and work for the UK, we would love to hear from you.

CSI texts reflect the major ideas and challenges that face individuals and society. They include: identity and cultural diversity; healthy lifestyles; community participation; enterprise; global dimension and sustainable development; technology and the media; creativity and critical thinking.

The design of CSI and its content creates a broad and balanced, inclusive programme that gives teachers the flexibility to meet the strengths and needs of every pupil. CSI includes reading, writing and numeracy – enabling schools to strengthen their focus on reading, writing and mathematics, while providing fun and inclusive material for pupils and encouraging interaction and cooperative work.
